Joe Farrell

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Joe (he/him) owns and works as an outpatient therapist at Peninsula Child & Family Services. He holds an active state license to practice clinical social work in Virginia and served as Vice Chair for the Virginia Society for Clinical Social Work's tidewater chapter. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University and then attained his master's degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Joe worked at Hampton Roads' busiest group practice where he spent time serving clients as an outpatient therapist. Additionally, Joe has recently done on-call emergent mental health evaluations and abuse calls for Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters' emergency room in Norfolk, where he was trusted by the hospital to make complex decisions affecting Hampton Roads' children & families who, at times, found themselves in his consult at their most desperate moment.
Joe now works exclusively at Peninsula Child & Family Services where he oversees clinical and administrative operations while managing his own caseload of clients.

Lauren Willoughby

Social Worker Supervisee Hampton & Telehealth

Lauren earned her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art degree with a minor in psychology from Old Dominion University. She went on to receive her Master of Social Work degree with a clinical concentration from Norfolk State University. She is currently working conjointly with Joseph Farrell, LCSW as a supervisee in social work where she will be overseen directly by him while providing care to clients seeking outpatient treatment at PCFS.

Lauren has experience working with The Department of Social Services for the child protective services unit and the on-going unit. She has years of clinical experience with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults experiencing a variety of behavioral and mental health issues, on an individual level. She often incorporates art and play therapy into her work but utilizes other treatment modalities as needed. Lauren is very thorough in her clinical work and is very passionate about making a difference. She is able to provide the best care for each of her clients by frequently educating herself, learning alternative treatment modalities, and applying effective interventions.

Amanda Zuccaro

Licensed Professional Counselor Hampton, Norfolk & Telehealth

Amanda attained her masters in counseling from Rosalind Franklind University in the Chicago area and soon thereafter began working as a licensed psychotherapist treating primarily children with mood and eating disorders. She has been working in the field of mental health for many years and in various capacities, though feels as if outpatient counseling is where she does her best work. Amanda recently moved to Virginia and PCFS is lucky to benefit from her services! Amanda has experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and parents who have difficulty achieving victory over their anxiety and/or eating disorders. She has coached parents on how to support their child during the process and teach them how to return stability to their home. If you are a parent in need of education, support, or coaching to assist your child manage their anxiety, disordered eating, or behavior issues, she can help. If you’re a child who struggles with mood or behaviors, she can help!

Rebeca Garcia

Licensed Professional Counselor Hampton & Telehealth

Rebeca holds a masters degree in clinical mental health counseling and forensic psychology from Marymount University and is a fully licensed mental health provider in the state of Virginia. She has years of experiencing providing mental health services in a variety of settings and levels of care, including outpatient therapy and intensive in-home counseling.

Rebeca focuses her clinical work on treating trauma in both children and adults. She utilizes trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as other play therapy modalities, such as therapeutic sandtray, to treat trauma in children. She is trained in EMDR for PTSD in adults and adolescents. She has experience in working with children and families dealing with major life adjustments, anxiety and depression, and oppositional behaviors.

Ciera Canaday

Clinical Director, LCSW Hampton & Telehealth

Ciera graduated from the University of Mary Washington with her bachelors in psychology as well as Virginia Commonwealth University with a masters degree in clinical social work. Ciera holds an active state license to practice clinical social work in the state of Virginia.

Ciera has experience providing therapeutic services to clients in both individual and group settings, and has worked at both hospital and outpatient therapy locales. Ciera is particularly passionate about utilizing CBT and solution-focused therapy to help serve adolescents, young adults & adults who may be experiencing anxiety, depression, and/or behavioral issues. In her free time, she enjoys spending time in the community with friends and her two rescue dogs or reading a good book at home.

Alicia Borre

Developmental Psychologist, PhD Hampton

Alicia is an applied developmental psychologist with experience in the development of prevention and intervention programs with underserved families. She has worked in various capacities, including as part of an interdisciplinary team to coordinate efforts in order to provide permanent homes for children in orphanages and foster care. She earned her masters degree in applied developmental psychology from George Mason University, and her doctorate in developmental psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Alicia is not part of the clinical team, and instead manages the tasks associated with business and practice administration. Her knowledge, skills and abilities as they relate to program development are integral to the overall health of the practice, and she’s a great contact as a liason for clients and other community healthcare professionals.

Samantha Osit

Office Manager

Sam was born and raised in Norfolk, VA and recently moved to the Richmond area. Sustained by her passion for service and people, Sam has worked in offices across Hampton Roads and volunteered for several non-profit organizations in the region over the last 15 years. Sam values her relationships with clients and community and is a lover of all animals and music. In her off time, she enjoys art, getting outdoors and spending time with her husband and family.

Yuri Gooding

Yuri brings two masters degrees to the practice - one in addiction counseling and another in professional counseling - as well as a license to practice clinical counseling in the state of Virginia. Yuri has an extensive history providing community based mental health services to the peninsula, serving clients as a clinical supervisor of in-home services as well as by directly servicing clients with severe mental health in their homes.

Yuri also has specialized training and clinical experience providing substance abuse counseling services, which he in part gained through graduate school and in part gained through clinical work in the field. Yuri is passionate about providing client-centered care and works particularly well with family systems and adolescents.

Shenay Wharton

Shenay graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University having earned a bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling with an emphasis in Alcohol and Drug Education and Rehabilitation Programming. She later attained a Master’s degree in Education from Salisbury State University with emphasis in community counseling.

Shenay is dually credentialed as a mental health and substance use disorder provider. She has been licensed as a professional counselor since 1998 and has worked in community mental health for over thirty years. Shenay has experience in treating children, adolescents, adults and families. She also enjoys providing gender specific treatment groups to women and adolescents impacted by substance use disorders as well as their families.

Shenay has had several specialty trainings and interests including but not limited to Cannabis Youth Treatment/Motivational Enhancement Treatment (MET/CBT), Trauma Focused CBT, Foster Care and Adoption Competency, Seeking Safety and Transitional Age Youth.

She is a member of the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Counselors (NAADAC) and the Virginia Association of Addiction Professionals (VAAP).

Whitley Richards

Whitley completed her graduate degree in Art Therapy and Counseling at Eastern Virginia Medical School. She started her practicing journey at Harbor Point Behavioral Health Center, where she gained the love of working with the adolescent populations struggling with anxiety, depression, oppositional/defiant behaviors, suicidal issues, and Borderline Personality traits.  She works with a cognitive behavioral and person-centered approach, and enjoys individual, group and family work.

Whitley uses Art Therapy and EMDR as tools to assist in sessions. The creative process is her true passion, and she attempts to incorporate Art Therapy as much as possible to assist with rapport building, emotional processing, self-expression, and coping skill building.

Casey McDaniel

Casey (she/her/hers) is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Art Therapist working toward her Certified Eating Disorder Specialist certification under the supervision of Caroyln Reed Hersh, MA, LPC, CEDS-S. Casey has a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from the University of Vermont double majoring in Studio Art and Psychology and a Master’s of Science degree from the Eastern Virginia Medical School majoring in Art Therapy and Counseling. Casey is an active member of iaedp, has completed training  from the National Eating Disorder Association as a Body Project Facilitator, and received additional training in trauma-informed care. 

Casey has served various populations, including children, adolescents, adults, groups, and families in inpatient, outpatient, and community based settings, as well as, completing psychosocial assessments and providing crisis intervention in the community. She has served as a supervising clinician for intensive in-home and mental health skill building services. Casey also facilitates Art Therapy Groups at a local Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Eating Disorder Treatment Center. She uses an integrated approach working with people, but heavily relies on CBT/DBT, Gestalt, and existential approaches. 

In her free time, Casey serves her community as a volunteer for the Virginia Medical Reserve Corps, co-facilitates a support group for adults with various eating disorders, spends time outdoors hiking in the mountains, and spends time at home making art.

 

Margaret Cook

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Margaret obtained both her Bachelor's and Master's of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has worked in the field of psychiatry since 2011. She began her nursing career in acute inpatient child psychiatry at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, where she worked for over five years, and from there worked as a registered nurse at Tucker Pavilion in Richmond, serving a diverse psychiatric patient population.

Margaret has been a psychiatric nurse practitioner since 2017. During this time, she has served individuals across the lifespan with diverse psychiatric needs, including mood disorders, thought disorders, eating disorders, geropsychiatry and neurocognitive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and substance use disorders. Margaret has a strengths-based, individualized approach to psychiatric treatment that affirms neurodiversity rather than pathologizes it. She believes that medications are most effective when used in conjunction with psychotherapy and lifestyle changes.

Leah Gerber

Leah earned her Master of Science in Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Old Dominion University in 2020. Leah is working under the supervision of Amanda Zuccaro, LPC as a resident in counseling and will be overseen directly by Zuccaro while providing care to clients seeking outpatient treatment at PCFS.

 Leah has served various populations, including children, adolescents, adults, and families of varying cultures and backgrounds. She has worked as a school counselor providing social-emotional learning and solution-focused interventions and also has experience facilitating groups in an academic setting. Leah found an interest in Ecotherapy while working for a nonprofit dedicated to promoting nature play for health and happiness.

 Leah has experience supporting individuals with depression, anxiety, grief, issues with identity or self-esteem, interpersonal challenges, and difficulty through transition(s). Leah has a holistic view of wellness and uses a Person-Centered approach integrated with CBT, Gestalt, and mindfulness. Leah’s goal is to assist individuals with emotional processing while cultivating self-awareness and self-efficacy. In her free time, Leah enjoys fostering animals for the Norfolk SPCA, connecting with friends and family, and spending time outdoors with her dog.

Jennifer Sloan

Jennifer earned her Master of Science in Counseling from the University of Memphis and is currently working toward licensure as a License Professional Counselor. She has worked with children, adolescents, and their families in a number of settings, including as a professional school counselor. While caring for clients seeking treatment at PCFS, Jennifer will work under the supervision of Amanda Zuccaro, LPC.

Jennifer has experience working with individuals who experience depression, anxiety, oppositional behaviors, trauma/post-traumatic stress, relationship issues, and strained family dynamics. Jennifer has a collaborative approach. She engages clients through a validating and supportive relationship and incorporates various approaches drawing from cognitive-behavioral, dialectical behavioral, strengths based, and family systems. Jenifer’s goal is to help her clients grow in insight and skills to address their unique situation.

In her free time, Jennifer works with the YWCA of Hampton Roads, providing crisis advocacy services to individuals experiencing domestic and/or sexual violence. She enjoys being active in the community and spending time with family and friends.

Kimberly Grebb

Kimberly earned her Master of Education degree in School Counseling from the University of Massachusetts Boston and completed additional coursework to become licensed as a professional counselor. Kimberly has worked as a counselor in both school and community settings for over five years but her passion for working with children and families was ignited nearly fifteen years ago while working with preschoolers. Kimberly has continued serving children and families in various capacities ever since, and especially enjoys working with the birth to five population and their caregivers. Kimberly has experience working with children, adolescents and families impacted by anxiety and mood disorders, difficulty with social and interpersonal skills, behavioral and parental challenges, developmental disabilities including Autism, grief and loss and significant life transitions. Kimberly also has personal experience with military family life and enjoys working with military families. Kimberly considers herself a life-long learner and is currently completing additional training and supervision to become a Registered Play Therapist. Kimberly often incorporates creativity and play into therapeutic sessions. In addition to a therapist, Kimberly is a wife and mother and enjoys exploring the local area with her family in her free time.

Eleanor Taylor

Eleanor is a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Spanish from Lewis and Clark College, studying abroad in Chile to attain Spanish fluency. Eleanor earned her Master of Science in the Couples and Family Therapy program from the University of Oregon.

Eleanor has since worked in public schools and community mental health clinics with both English and Spanish speaking clients. She has a passion for working with teenagers and is fully trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for trauma, depression, and anxiety. Eleanor prides herself on making authentic connections with clients and helping guide them towards their mental health goals. Eleanor is a new addition to both the PCFS team as well as the Hampton Roads area, and she is excited for the opportunity to build relationships with new clients and the community.

Carlyn Troia

Carlyn (they/them/theirs) was born in Chesapeake, raised in Virginia Beach, and spends a majority of their time in the Norfolk area. Carlyn is a former teacher with a bachelor’s degree from ODU in Women’s Studies. They are also a future therapist, currently studying at ODU for their Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. They have spent a majority of the past 10 years working closely with children and cultivating environments where kids can truly thrive. Carlyn loves using their role as practice administrator at PCFS to ensure children, teens, and adults are all receiving the best possible care. In their free time Carlyn enjoys snuggling their cat, going on day trips to the mountains, and hanging out with friends and family.

Juli Toepp

Julianne received Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Old Dominion University and her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University. She is currently pursing her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision, also from Liberty University.

Julianne is a Resident in Counseling and is under the supervision of Shenay Wharton, LPC, CSAC and Christina Jones, LCSW, RPT-S. She has experience providing outpatient services to children and teens with a wide variety of presenting problems. Julianne utilizes a developmental and strength-based approach to counseling. She is very passionate about utilizing child-centered play therapy with young children but draws from other treatment modalities such as CBT and solution-focused therapy based on the client’s needs. She is also a U.S. Navy veteran and enjoys working with military families on issues related to the military lifestyle.

Caroline Minto

Caroline Minto is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia who has served the Virginia Beach area since 2016. She has experience partnering with adults, couples, adolescents, and children seeking help with depression, stress, anxiety, mood disorders, family dynamics, and behavior concerns. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Mental Health and Human Services and Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling from Franciscan University of Steubenville.

 Caroline utilizes several different therapy approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and always aims to collaborate and create comfort within the therapy process.

Caroline seeks to establish a meet-you-where-you-are relationship in order to assist in using your strengths to identify and meet your goals. Caroline enjoys working with any age group and looks forward to helping you move towards a healthier and happier life!

Melina Hoyos

Melina (she/her) earned her M.Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The College of William & Mary. Here at PCFS, she serves as a Resident in Counseling under the supervision of our very own Whitley Richards, LPC. She received her B.A. in psychology at Christopher Newport University, where she also studied Spanish language and sociology. Less than a year later at W&M, she became the pioneer clinician in the Pathways to Hope Initiative between the W&M FCE Clinic and the law school's Immigration Clinic, where she provided bilingual counseling to Hispanic immigrants.

Melina is excited to work with a large age range of clients on a multitude of concerns. Most of her experience has been with adolescents and adults, though she also enjoys working with families and groups. She is passionate about working with anxiety, depression, life transitions, general life stress, and trauma history. Her primary theoretical orientations are Person-centered Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Melina is present- and future-focused, using your personal characteristics to collaboratively develop goals and solutions that are made for you.

In her free time, she loves to explore nature, spend time with loved ones, and play with her pets. She has lived in various parts of Virginia and loves to experience nearby areas and attractions.

Multicultural awareness and competency is an important principle of her work. Melina provides therapy services in English and Spanish, as needed by client (Melina provee servicios de terapia en inglés y español, según las necesidades del cliente).

Jasmine Anderson

Jasmine was born and raised in Virginia. Driven by her passion for helping people , Jasmine has over 10 years in customer support. She is a very big advocate for mental health especially for children.

Jasmine is very excited to provide support and build long lasting relationships with patients and the PCFS team! In her spare time Jasmine enjoys amusement parks, all things Harry Potter and most importantly spending time with her spouse and energetic daughter.

Jordyn Stanley

Jordyn (she/her) earned her bachelor’s of social work with a minor in women’s studies at Radford University.  She later graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with her master’s in clinical social work.  Jordyn is a supervisee in social work under the supervision of Joseph Farrell, LCSW at PCFS. 

Jordyn has worked with various populations to include individuals, children, adolescents, and families.  She has experience providing services in various settings to include schools, community, and inpatient facilities.  Jordyn utilizes a variety of therapeutic modalities to include components of Solution-Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a family-systems based approach.  She is passionate about building relationships, identifying goals, and effecting change through a strengths-based perspective.  In her free time, Jordyn enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, two cats, and golden retriever. 

Afaribea Fosu

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Afaribea is a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from George Mason University in 2013, and her Master's of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2019.

In the beginning of her nursing career she managed care for general medical ailments in the adult and geriatric populations. After becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, she provided care to children and adolescents with mental health and behavioral issues at a residential facility in the Hampton Roads area. 

Afaribea currently treats and manages care across the lifespan to individuals with various mood disorders to include: depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, Bipolar Disorder, and ADHD .

Although Afaribea provides medication management, she also believes that therapy plays a vital role in managing one’s mental health needs.

Kylie Deguzman

Kylie holds a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Corban University. Kylie is working under the supervision of Amanda Zuccaro, LPC as a Resident in Counseling and is overseen by Amanda while providing care to clients.

Kylie has served clients from a range of life stages and backgrounds, including children, adolescents, college students & adults. Previously, Kylie worked as a school-based therapist in Portland, Oregon, providing care to some of Portland's most underserved communities. Kylie has a passion to support individuals working through depression, self-esteem concerns, anxiety, interpersonal challenges, and navigating life transitions. Kylie encourages collaboration with clients to build a strong foundation of trust and compassion for client's growth. Therapy with Kylie draws from psychodynamic therapy, person-centered therapy, attachment theory, as well as strengths-based counseling and aims to help clients become more curious and compassionate toward themselves and develop insight into their unique stories. In her free time, Kylie enjoys exploring new cities, drinking a good cup of coffee, playing games of all kinds, and spending time with her family and cats.

Kyle Helwig

Kyle graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work and went on to Southern New Hampshire University, where he earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He holds a resident counseling degree in the state of Virginia. Kyle is working under the supervision of Shenay Wharton, LPC as a Resident in Counseling and is overseen by Shenay while providing care to clients.

Kyle specializes in trauma-focused counseling and has worked with families, adults, and children ages 6 to 65 in individual and group counseling settings. Kyle has supported persons struggling with grief, loss, PTSD, anxiety, depression, children’s behavioral problems, child abuse, night terrors, adoption, parenting, divorce, domestic abuse, gaslighting, sexual abuse, Veteran trauma, crisis intervention and management, insomnia, and substance use. 

Kyle uses an adaptable Person-Centered Cognitive Behavioral approach grounded in compassion. He has trained in various therapeutic specialties to support his clients with methods most appropriate for their unique situations, needs, and goals. Kyle is experienced in providing Internal Family Systems, Trauma-Focused CBT, Spiritual Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Eye Movement Integration, and the ASAM levels of care.

Kyle is developing a foundation in multicultural counseling, including multicultural knowledge, awareness, and sensitivity among Hispanic ethnicities in the counseling setting, supported by his past volunteer work in Guatemala. He holds ILR Level 2 Spanish-speaking proficiency but is not fluent.

Kyle is excited to promote neurological, interpersonal, intercultural, communal, and spiritual plasticity and support amongst traumatized individuals and communities in the Hampton Roads area. Kyle is a member of The American Counseling Association, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, The National Society of Leadership and Success, and The Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling.
